Worldbuilding through thumbnails

Personal project

(Just started, still in process)

Since I am interested in both art and narrative design/world building, I started a person project.

I will create a world through thumbnails I make. After making a page of thumbnails in accordance with a theme or word (for example; monster), I will chose one, define it and write about its role in the world.

I started out with rules of the world and rules for myself (see bellow).

After that I created a main character that will travel the world and "document" everything he sees. This way I will puzzle the world together one thumbnail session at a time.

Rules of the world

  • There are no gods, even though there might be creatures who believe in one or more.

  • There are creatures who have almost no power at all and creatures that can move mountains or make the earth tremble. But all creatures contribute to the world in some way.

  • There is magic in this world (though not everyone is able to use it). It can be overflowing in one spot of the world, and be very limited in another.

  • No one knows where magic truly comes from.

Rules for me

  • All additions in the journal must follow the rules above.

  • Make thumbnails according to theme (environment, type of creature, etc.)

  • Write their ‘information’ after making the thumbnails (make additional thumbnails/drawings if needed).

  • Write the story of how Tavin meets creatures or goes through environments on separate pages.

  • Thumbnail a map so you keep track of where Tavin as been.
